copper hose? maybe you need another mechanic. the thermostat is in the block at the end of the upper radiator hose. You remove the hose mounting bracket to access, but be sure to drain some Radiator fluid first. be careful not to spill on ground as is very toxic to cats and dogs.

I've always understood that the thermostat is housed in with the water pump. The water pump has to be removed to expose the thermostat that is sticking and not allowing the water to flow through to the radiator.
My car did the same thing, the hose that runs to the thermostat should be a black rubber hose the only copper or aluminum hoses i know of is the ones that run to the ac unit and you don't want to cut them!!! there should be a 1%26quot; to 1 1/2%26quot; hose that runs from the radiator to the engine block follow that hose ant it will take you to your thermostat. You will have to take the hose off to get to it.
Whomever replaced the radiator should've replaced the thermostat as well. It's like puting on new tires without changing the valve stem. But it's probably not the thermostat. 1 out 25 people that change their thermostat due to over-heating actually fixes it. The more common problem with over-heating is the radiator fan not coming on which can be a number of things. Or even a small coolant leak can cause over-heating too. But if you wanna change it go ahead it's cheap enough. I believe that copper hose you're talking about is the bypass line for the thermostat for when it's closed.
follow the top radiator hose back to the engine there is where th thermostat should be . turn on the heater and see if the heat is working if it ain't then your water pump is probably bad or the heater core is. do you have water on the floor board on the passenger side floor if so your heater core is bad if you have any more questions email me at ericsouders@ymail .com
