Jeep cherokee laredo overheating?

well this case is kind of racking my head, regardless if the car would be mine or not...,buddy of mine has a cherokee laredo 4x4 ,6 cilynders,4.0 litres, year 89 ,jeep is in perfect shape and very good horse power, really cheap in gas too!!,but it has a mayor problem it's keeps overheating all the time....here are the facts:can not idle it not even 5 minutes because the temperature gauge goes all the way to red, cooling fan has to be running all the time so the engine dont get too hot,we change the termostat, water pump, put a brand new radiator, change radiator hoses,we checked antifreeze level, this vehicle wouldn't overheat as long as it's running on the road, i guess because the cool air hits the engine while driving it,but as soon as he stopped his car like in a red light the temp.gauge goes really high and the anti frezze spills out of the recovering tank.so we dont know really what's wrong with this car.we took it to many repairs shops and still the same yet.thnks for all the answers

i've had this problem before in the shop at my school. a classmate of mine was actually OVERFILLING the anti-freeze levels, which caused it to overheat. not sure if that would be the case, but ya never know. hrm. don't trust me though, i don't know to much about engines and such. i'm just learning.

sounds like you have an obstruction in the block somewhere.

have your friends engine block flushed professionally they can do what you call a positive pressure flush, basically forcing anything that blocks the cooling passages from flowing freely. if the block cannot transfer heat through to the coolant, it will overheat no matter what you replace rad, hoses, thermostat etc.

having this done doesn't cost much

hope this helps
check the clutch fan,,same prob. with a 90 4.0 clutch fan fixed problem
